'Tis the season for germs. It seems as though a few bugs are going around, and none of them are fun. We had a very small class today- only 14 first graders!- thanks to sickness. We practiced washing hands and kept hydrated. I am hopeful that we have our friends return soon. Bell Photography will be here tomorrow to do picture retakes. A flyer was sent home as a reminder today. We will have a student store on Thursday of this week. First graders are welcome to bring small items from their collection that they no longer play with. The class had a great time haggling with each other and budgeting for their wants and needs. Upland Terrace is also participating in a clothing drive for refugee families that will go through December 18. In particular we are looking for new socks or mittens of any size. Thank you for your support with the drive!
This week we are working on wrapping up the unit on responsibility. Tomorrow we will start reading Pigsty. This is a tricky story, so we will be reading it several times to pick it apart and look for strategies the author uses to tell his story. We are also putting our writing skills to the test with some nonfiction passages and short informational writing. The first passage will help us learn and write about reindeer.
We are also close to finishing chapter 4 in math. We will complete one more lesson, then take the test on Wednesday. Chapter 5 explores related facts and fact fluency. The first graders will practice using the whole and two parts to write 4 related sentences, and determine if addition and subtraction sentences are equal to each other.
