Welcome back! I hope everyone had a restful Thanksgiving break! It was great to spend time with my family, but I was also excited to open the door and start today with the first graders. The snow made everything a bit more interesting. A few first graders had so much fun that they spent some of the day in wet socks, shoes, and pants. Your child is welcome to keep a change of shoes and/or clothes at school to keep warm during the cold season.
A pink note was sent home today about Upland's day of service this week. We are collecting non-perishable food items through Thursday, December 1. Thank you for you generosity in support of others who may be struggling this time of year!
This week the class will be reading and writing about growing things. Today we made predictions while we read the book A Mystery Vine. Try as I might, I could not convince the first graders that the vine was growing anything other than pumpkins! They have become predicting rock stars! I was very proud of their progress today! The class will also sharpen their ability to read carefully by collecting facts and ideas from different texts so that we can write informational pieces.
We are getting ready to take the test on subtraction strategies. Our next math challenge will be understanding related facts and working on fact fluency. I look forward to this chapter every year because it is so connected to the holiday season and time spent with family.
Have a wonderful week!
