The first graders are really working hard this week! We started a new unit on time this week. I was really impressed with what they already knew about days, months, and years. We talked about things you can do in a day, month, and year, as well as shorter times. This term we are focusing on informational writing so the first graders will talk and write about what you can do with your time based on the texts we read. We are working on subtraction strategies still in math. Some of these are tricky, so we are slowing down to practice what we know before moving on. The class is also busy learning new centers.
This time of year seems to go by fast as we prepare for the holidays. Upland Terrace will be hosting several fun events this month and next, starting with a Reflections assembly from grades 1-3 on Wednesday and Dads and Donuts from 8-9 on Thursday morning. As a reminder, next week is a short one. School will dismiss early on Tuesday and resume November 28. The first graders will join their fifth grade buddies on Monday, November 21 for a modern day Thanksgiving feast. We will eat with our buddies during part of our normal lunch time. Your child can choose from the following for lunch that day: turkey hot dogs on a bun, potato chips, popcorn, craisins, apple cider, and pumpkin cookies. We will not be eating in the lunchroom that day. If your child has special dietary needs, please send them with any necessary substitutes.
I hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving!
