We had an exciting morning today. Ballet West came to teach the school a little about ballet, then performed a few dances from The Nutcracker. It was a nice way to falll back into our routine after daylight savings this weekend.
This week we will be working on two more subtraction strategies. We started to work on connecting addition to subtraction. The first graders noticed that an addition sentence can have the same numbers as a subtraction sentence. We will keep working on that idea next chapter as well, so I am thrilled to hear the class notice that already! We will also work on breaking apart numbers to make easier numbers to subtract.
Today we started talking about maps. We read a text about two children that used a map to find their way around their community. The first graders were excited to find symbols on the map that matched what the two children were looking for. The class will learn more about symbols, the compass rose, and man-made and natural features this week. We will even work on creating maps of our own!
This Wednesday we will have Mrs. Mason come in to teach another music lesson. The first graders had a blast learning about William Tell and the history behind his famous overture. I'm excited to see what she has in store for us this time. Our class is also scheduled to meet with the ceramics specialist next Tuesday, November 15 at 1:40. The first graders will be flexing their arm muscles and creating their own ceramics piece.
Have a wonderful week!
