This week we are reading about structures and how they are built. The first graders enjoyed reading about how a ship is constructed today. I was surprised by how much they already knew about boats. Later this week we will read about bridges and homes. We will also start an opinion writing unit. Opinions are fun to explore and write about with this age. Given the right choices or topic to choose a side on, they can come up with some fantastic evidence for their thinking.
We wrapped up the measurement chapter last week. We will continue to practice telling time to the hour and half hour, as well as measure things around the room, for the rest of the year. Today we started talking about graphs. The first graders helped me put together a graph with their favorite colors. We decided graphs can help us keep information organized instead of counting, recounting, and miscounting. We also revisited words like "fewer" and "more" to help us read the information on graphs. We will make picture graphs and bar graphs, then explore tally charts over the next few days.
Next week there will be a school picture taken first thing in the morning on Monday. Please encourage your child to wear their school shirt or a white or red top for the picture. Thank you for all the snack donations that were sent in last week! I think the class is going through a collective growth spurt. The box never seems to stay well-stocked for long these days. I greatly appreciate your continued generosity, especially when we are so close to being a grown-up group of (almost) second graders.
Have a wonderful week!
