This week we have a few fun things on our calendar. Today we learned a bit about Asian countries. The students were invited to particiapte in two dances and challenged to learn a few new words from Iran, Afghanistan, and Turkey. Tomorrow we will work with Miss Addie for one last time on drawing techniques. The pastel trees that are hanging in the hall were created with her help two weeks ago. I greatly appreciate having Mrs. Mason join us to help guide the first graders through whatever art we get to explore! Wednesday families are invited to eat lunch with their first graders during our usual lunch time. You are welcome to meet your child for lunch and recess between 11:30 and 12:05. By Thursday we will all be exhausted and ready for a regular schedule!
This week's reading theme is "Make it Happen!". We will read some great texts, including Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type. These stories will help the first graders see examples of working together to achieve a goal. Today we read a story about pencils, crayons, and markers that worked together to show a girl, Lucy, that drawing with them is just as fun as working on her new computer. Last week we practiced writing opinion sentences during writing. This week we will start to add some evidence from texts about our opinions. By the end of the year the first graders need to be able to write an opinion and support it with three facts or evidence from a text. Now that the class knows how to write an opinion sentence, we will start to practice looking for ways to add support. I'm sure the cows and other animals from Click, Clack, Moo will give us plenty to write about.
We are getting ready to wrap up the chapter on graphs and data collecting in math. The class has learned how to make bar and picture graphs, as well as tally charts. Tomorrow we will apply what we know about each of those to make graphs that match story problems. After the test we will start the unit on shapes. These last two chapters are a lot of fun to complete at the end of the year. Shapes are easy to find everywhere so we can search for math all around the school.
Have a wonderful week!
