Happy Monday! This week we will be busy learning about graphs and plant life cycles. Today we talked about bar graphs. The class helped me find other examples of bars so that we could remember this type of graph. The first graders found the legs on tables and on the lamps were like certain graphs, but other graphs had bars that looked like the bars on the playground equipment. Graphing is always a fun unit to teach because of all the possibilities to include in a graph. So far, we have made graphs with information on favorite animals, art supplies, eye color, and favorite after school activity. To round out the data collection chapter, we will also talk about tally marks and represent different data sets with them.
During reading time, we are reading about plants and how they change as they grow. We will read different books about the seed life cycle, and make a model to show what we know. We will also write our opinions about different plants and other living things.
We have a few events coming up in the next few weeks- get ready to mark your calendars for some fun! On Thursday, May 5th, we will be going to Red Butte Garden. I am looking for 4 parent volunteers to meet us at the garden to walk with a staff member through the facility. We will be at Red Butte from 9:30-12:00. Please let me know if you are available and interested in joining us that day. We also have a first grade picnic planned for May 24. Families are welcome to bring a blanket and a lunch to share with their child between 11:30 and 12:15. First graders normally have lunch from 11:30-12:00, so we will be meeting just outside the classroom doors on the front playground.
Have a wonderful week!
