This week we are working on wrapping up chapter 6 in math. The first graders have been working hard on making models of and counting numbers up to 100 so far. Today we talked about what makes 100 and why we write the digits that we do. Tomorrow we will talk about the numbers between 110 and 120, especially focusing on how the counting pattern repeats like with the first 100 numbers.
We have been learning about precipitation in reading and science. The first graders are making a book of examples and what that type of weather makes us do. So far we have discussed rain and snow. I read Thundercakes by Patricia Polacco on Friday. We talked about how some weather can make us scared, but we can do things that make us happy again. We also made a list of other activities people do in the rain. This week we will continue talking about snow.
Last week we celebrated several victories. The 100th day food drive was very successful. By the end of Friday, we had 83 items! Even though we did not get to 100, the first graders felt proud of their good deed. Thank you for helping our class reach their goal! Last week the blue dragon team earned first place in the Road to Success competition as well. I believe we have until the 26th to collect minutes. Thank you so much for all your help entering reading minutes!
The school has a very busy week this week, so first graders will not have homework. We will exchange valentines on Thursday. First graders are encouraged to make a box or envelope to hold all their treats that day.
I look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow or Wednesday night!
Have a wonderful week!
