Thank you to everyone for taking time to meet with me last week. It was great to have a chance to sit and talk about how your child has grown over the past few months. Thank you for helping your first grader track their reading minutes. The Poison Dart Frog team earned first place which made the class go crazy with excitement! We have two more week of competition, so I will keep recording our reading minutes. International week is coming next week. A yellow order form was sent home last Wednesday for Brazil Night. If you would like to pre-order dinner for Thursday, March 2 please return the form by this Friday, February 24.
This week we are reading about how can we sort things. The first graders especially enjoyed reading The Lost Button. We reread the story today to talk about how the author gives readers clues about how a character is feeling. We examined words that were in the story that told us how Frog and Toad felt while looking for a lost button. We will continue working with that skill as we read Sort It Out. This text has many more details in its illustrations so we will use words and illustrations to find information.
We are still working on adding two-digit numbers in math. Today we used a hundred chart to add numbers. We also learned a new game! The first graders loved rolling single digit numbers, then trading those ones for tens when they could. They rolled their way to 57 today, so we will keep playing to see if student teams can roll and trade all the way to 100.
Have a wonderful week!
