Happy Monday! Today was our first day touring Brazil for International week. The first graders learned about a few places around the country, some Portuguese, and enjoyed a capoeira demonstration. Capoeira is a Brazilian martial art that combines dance, music, and acrobatics. It was exciting to watch the performers flip and tumble around each other! Later this week students will get to experience different Brazilian food and learn more about the Brazilian culture. Families are invited to participate in a fun night of food, activities, and entertainment on Thursday from 6-8 PM.
If that was not exciting enough, we are also reading about what we is in the sky. Today we read about a bird that watched the clouds change shapes. We will also read about the moon and write fictional stories. The class has been working hard on adding details to their writing so that it sounds more interesting.
The first graders know two strategies for adding two-digit numbers. Today we reviewed how to use a hundred chart and how to use models to add. I think they are finally getting the hang of both, so we will start with making a ten to add tomorrow. This strategy can be tricky, so we will take a few days to practice with it.
Thank you for helping your child record their reading minutes! The class LOVED earning first place last week and is very determined to keep reading. I look in planners and gather notes from home every day. The Road to Success website is a great place to record minutes too. The contest has been really fun for the first graders. I hope that they keep up their reading even after it ends. Each of them has made progress in their reading this year. A huge part of that is time spent reading at home. Thank you for supporting your child's growth!
Have a wonderful week!
