Happy Leap Day! This week we are reading Dr. Seuss books to celebrate his birthday. We will create some fun Seuss-like creatures and write a story about them. The first graders will also learn how to use rainbow writing to monitor their writing. Each color in the rainbow has different criteria. The first graders will compare their writing to each color to decide what type of writing they have currently. Then we will all make writing goals to help change writing pieces into the next color. I am excited to put the first graders in charge of their writing!
Last week the first graders took a test on comparing numbers in math. This week we will start to add and subtract two-digit numbers. This can be a tricky skill so we will start with just adding and subtracting tens. There are a few strategies used in this chapter, like those that the class used when they practiced addition and subtraction this fall.
This month we will be working with the art specialist, Mr. Borcik. He will help the first graders learn more about different art mediums. We also have a new computer teacher, Miss Banning, coming in to help us use the Chromebooks once a week. We are so lucky to have both new experiences to add to our week!
