Welcome back! I hope everyone had the merriest of holidays! We took it a bit slow today so that our muscle memories could wake up and get going. I did not include spelling words with the homework packet this week. Since it is so close to the end of the term, I am going to reassess each first grader and rearrange small groups.
Today we learned about how to use our families to write related facts. I drew a picture of my family and explained that related facts are like families. My family has 9 members, including 3 dogs, so I decided to write two addition sentences about how my family has 5 adults and 4 children. Then I wrote two subtraction sentences that explained that if I took away the adults from the family, I would have 4 children or vice versa. The first graders drew their own pictures and wrote similar sentences. We will continue to work on related facts the rest of the week.
We started a unit on the sun and moon today. I read a book about the sun and we discussed things we knew and wanted to know about the sun. The rest of the week we will make observations about how the sun moves in the sky and discuss how the sun affects our daily lives. Next week we will focus on the moon.
Friday we will be going to The Leonardo on a field trip from 9:30 - 11:30. If you are interested in going, I have one more volunteer spot open. Click on the following link for more information or to sign up: http://vols.pt/CbcxyZ
Have a wonderful week!
