The class is reading folktales this week in the reading program. Today we read the story Interrupting Chicken. The first graders thought the little red chicken was hilarious with her versions of how the bed time stories should go. We will also read The Nice Mitten and practice finding and using past and present-tense verbs in sentence writing.
The first graders are working on related facts in math this month. They have been practicing writing addition and subtraction sentences that are related, such as 5 + 7 = 12, 12- 5 = 7. We are building on that by writing the other two sentences that can be made using 12, 5, and 7. Each child will create a family portrait and write the 4 sentences that can be found in their family.
This is the last week in the term. There is no school this Friday, which also means that school will dismiss early this Thursday. Next week there is no school on Monday, January 15 in observance of Dr. Martin Luther King day. All of first grade will be going to the Leonardo on Friday, January 19. I am looking for one last parent to join us from 10-12 at The Leonardo. Please let me know if you're available for this fun field trip. Later this month we will be celebrating the 100th day. The first graders are encouraged to dress like they are 100 years old for the parade on January 30. There are 3 more volunteer spots for our party at 2:30.
