Tonight is Arby's night! Between 5 and 8 PM 15% of tonight's sales goes directly to Upland Terrace. Thank you to the PTA for arranging this fun event!
Hip, hip hooray, it's almost the 100th day! We will be celebrating the big 1-0-0 all day this Thursday. All three classes will start by parading around the school in their 100-year-old best. After the parade we will come in and read some books about the number 100. Our class will also rotate to the other two first grade classrooms to do some fun activities with Ms. Bawden and Mrs. Baxter. The last hour of the day we will have a party with just our class. The first graders will get to make a 100 piece snack, make some "100" art, create a headband, and hunt for missing numbers on a chart. It will be almost too much fun for one day!
This week we are wrapping up the chapter on place value. The first graders have nearly mastered working with tens and ones to make a number. Tomorrow we will tackle the last lesson in the chapter. This lesson focuses on thinking about the tens and ones in a number as flexible. So, I could make a model of 47 with 4 tens and 7 ones. I could also make a model of 47 with 3 tens and 17 ones. This helps lay the foundation for adding and subtracting two-digit numbers.
We are reading about animals this month in Wonders. This week we are discussing how animals survive in the wild. Today's text, Go Wild, helped us learn what animals eat. We will also read a poem about vultures and compare how the authors gave us information about the animals. There will be lots of deep thinking with these texts!
Have a wonderful week!
