We will start the week with a field trip to Wasatch Jr. High to watch their production of "The Wizard of Oz" on Monday. The first graders will be walking soon after the tardy bell. Please help your child be on time to school that day. The class earned a movie in the afternoon. Students are welcome to bring a blanket or pillow to lay on during the movie. The movie choices are as follows: The Tale of Despereaux, Dr. Seuss: The Grinch Grinches the Cat in the Hat, and Despicable Me. The class will vote to watch one of these movies. Please let me know if you have any questions about the selections.
We are close to wrapping up the last chapter on place value. The first graders learned three addition strategies last week. I provided a "cheat sheet" to help with homework. These strategies help the first graders understand why we add tens and ones the way we do, instead of following the standard algorithm that we may be familiar with as adults.
Last week the class learned about symbols and monuments found at school, in our state, and for the country. This week we will learn parts of a map and how to use a compass. We will also read books about maps, such as The Way to Captain Yankee's, to prepare for making maps of our own.
The snack basket is getting low again. I greatly appreciate any and all donations to keep the first graders focused during the long afternoon!
Have a wonderful week!
