Happy May Day! Today is the first day of Teacher Appreciation week. Our hall door is beautifully decorated with some super cute first grade faces. Thank you to Mrs. Jorgensen for all your hard work on that project! This week is also the first of two weeks of our "Work for Upland" fundraiser. Today we brainstormed some ways to earn money for our school. The first graders offered ideas like clean my room and do the dishes or laundry, however, their favorite idea seemed to be clean windows. Many of them nodded enthusiastically when it was added to our list of ideas. All money we raise over the next two weeks helps support the wonderful PTA. If your child brings money in, please label the envelope with my name and the total so that we can keep track of how much we earn every day.
This week we are reading about helpers in the community. Today we learned about different people that can help us, like firefighters, parents, coaches, and teachers. We will connect our reading to some writing this week with an opinion about what is responsible. We have been reading a chapter book called Roscoe Riley Rules- Never Glue Your Friends to Chairs. The main character can be mischievous, and uses permanent glue to help his friends do their best during an open house performance. We will have to debate if Roscoe's choice really helped his class before we write our opinions.
We are close to the end of the chapter on 2-dimensional shapes. Today we talked about breaking shapes into equal shares called halves. Tomorrow we will add "quarters" to our math vocabulary. The last topic we will explore in math this year is 3-dimensional shapes. I am excited to expand our learning about shapes to cylinders, cones, and cubes in a few days.
Mark your calendars for some end of the year fun! The carnival will be May 12, from 4-7 PM. Order forms for Iceberg dinners are due Thursday, May 4. The Fun Run will be May 19th. First grade will most likely do their run in the morning. Parents are welcome to join. Field Day will be May 25. If there is a parent that would like to join in the fun that morning from 9-11, please let me know.
Have a wonderful week!
