May is here! Today we had a busy day taking apart shapes and using a new math word in the process. The first graders were quick to connect "compose" from last week and "decompose" from today. It was especially fascinating to watch each table work on the Problem Solving page. They were challenged to compose, or put together, a different number of shapes to make the same shape. Some groups used more triangles, rather than trapezoids. Other groups shared that a rhombus covered the same amount of space as two triangles. All that math talk was learning gold! I am so proud of the class for working so hard together to solve the shape challenges from today.
Tomorrow will be the LAST DAY for library. Mrs. Sampson has started to take inventory of the books, so we will return books for the last time this year. Thank you for helping your child be responsible for their library books this year. Spring pictures are also due tomorrow. Please return either the pictures or payment. The first grade will be going to Red Butte Garden this Thursday. I sent home a green sheet with more information about the trip. We are excited to spend the morning outside learning about plants and their needs. Please let me know if you have any questions.
A few weeks ago, I announced the first grade picnic on May 24. The first grade team has had to rearrange this event to the next day, Wednesday, May 25. I apologize for any confusion. First graders will still start lunch at 11:30. You are welcome to bring a blanket and lunch to share until 12:15. I look forward to seeing everyone again soon!
Have a wonderful week!
