I cannot believe how quickly time has passed! It seems like not too long ago, we were celebrating just minutes of independent work and couldn't ever remember exactly when lunch is. Now i get to spend my time in a room full of personality and less questions about when lunch and recess are. What a difference 50 days can make!
This week we will read about animal homes. Today we read Babies on the Bayou. The class helped me pick out the animals based on the clues in the text. There are a few other short texts we will read this week. As we read we will practice finding the main idea. The first graders will use the strategy "Reread" too. That helps us keep track of what we learned from a text and help us really understand what the text says.
Writing was very exciting today. Each student started their first book. The entire class was thrilled to have more than just one page to tell their story on. I am excited to read all about whichever memory they chose!
Today in math we learned how to subtract by comparing. It seemed like the first graders enjoyed using the "match them up" chant to match and subtract. The rest of the week we will be working on subtracting all or zero, finding all ways to take apart a number, and reviewing what we've learned before taking the subtraction test.
This week and next there are a few events to put on your calendar. There will be a School Community council meeting starting at 1:45. The council will be discussing putting sidewalks on the south side of Upland Drive, and would greatly appreciate any community input. Wednesday, November 15 is picture retake day. Friday is Dads and Donuts. Donuts will be served from 8-9 AM.
