I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving! I am very lucky to have so many great people to spend the holiday with. Most first graders were pretty excited about the next holiday. I cannot believe it's time to start thinking about shopping, parties, and wrapping presents, but December will be upon us shortly! This year, the first and second grade classes will be watching the movie "Once Upon a Christmas" on December 20. I know how busy the week before the holidays can be, especially the day before school dismisses for Winter Break. If you or another family member, (like a grandparent, aunt, or uncle), is interested in sitting with the class during the movie, I would greatly appreciate the help. The time is still TBA, but I will let you know as soon as possible!
The first graders are working hard through subtraction strategies. I was pleasantly surprised to see them work through a challenging day together today, despite 5 days off of school. Addition strategies are coming up next. I am hopeful that they will be easier after all the work we have put in with subtraction strategies.
This week we will work on maps and symbols during reading. Tomorrow we will start by reading the book The Way to Captain Yankee's. It's a cute story about a cat that travels to meet her friend for lunch by using a map. We will continue by finding north, south, east, and west in the room, then landmarks in each direction. The first graders will also get some practice in identifying places on real maps before making their own.
In writing, the first graders are crafting books with personal stories from memories. So far we have shared stories about family vacations, holidays, birthdays, and other exciting events. It has been fun watching each of them grow as writers! Their personalities are starting to show through, as well as their eagerness to write, write, write!
Have a wonderful week!
