Red Butte Garden was a bit chilly but a lot of fun today. The first graders learned about the plant life cycle and parts of a plant with the great garden staff. A huge "THANK YOU" to Mr. Burkhart, Mrs. LeBaron, and Mrs. Rigby for their help today! I hope they had as much fun as I did watching the first graders.
This week we will be wrapping up the first unit in Wonders. We will read text selections about how we and other living things move. We will also write directions for different actions, like how to cartwheel, skip, or reach up high. We are circling back to addition in chapter three. This week we are learning about touch points, the count on strategy, and finding addition sentences with double addends.
The Jog-a-thon is coming up next week. We are hoping to raise money over the next two weeks. I greatly appreciate the time and energy families spend in support of the school. I would love to enhance the reading experiences the first graders have with books on cd. Every child loves being read to, and hearing a fluent reader helps children comprehend books they may not otherwise be able to read independently. Donations to the fundraiser will be collected through Friday, October 14. You are welcome to send the collection envelope to school at any time before then. Thank you again for all your support!
All first graders will soon have access to a fantastic supplemental reading program called Lexia. I am in the process of assigning a Chromebook to each student in the class. The first graders will then take an assessment that determines what skills they need support with. The program is web-based and provides detailed reports on each child's progress. This program is new to me, but I am excited to start with the class soon. Teachers that are more familiar with the program have recommended students have headphones that fit comfortably. The program includes skill-based games which can get noisy if every child is working on different skills at varying paces. I have a few available for use, and each child works differently. If you feel like your child would work at his or her best with headphones, you are welcome to send a pair to school. We will start the program within the next week and continue for the rest of the year.
Have a wonderful week!
