It's Red Ribbon this week! Today we kicked off the week with an assembly. We listened to Mr. Williams give us examples of how to be brave and make choices that help us grow and stay safe. We will use what we learned today to write pledges that we can stick to for the year. This year, the school is challenging students to show off their commitment to say no to bullying and drugs with a photo contest. The Red Ribbon Campaign is also looking for themes to use for next year's red Ribbon Week. Information about both contests can be found at redribbon.org/contest and redribbon.org/enter respectively. To keep the spirit going at Upland Terrace, there is a fun activity or outfit suggestion for each day. I sent home a flyer from the school with details about each, but here is the short version: Tuesday- wear jeans. Wednesday- wear a hat and walk to school if possible. Thursday- wear crazy socks. Red Ribbon and Photo contests entries are due by 9 AM on Thursday. Friday- wear crazy hair or super hero attire.
This week is also apple week. Today we read Johnny Appleseed, by Steven Kellogg. We asked questions while we read and ended up discussing what makes this version of his story a tall tale. The first graders found examples of information that is considered a fact, then an example of an exaggeration. I was very impressed by how quickly the class caught on to "exaggeration" and what the author put into the story as examples. We will continue the week with more apple-themed activities, including apple experiments, making a model of the apple's life cycle, exploring where apples comes from, and of course, writing about what we have learned. I plan to wrap up the week with an experiment that makes apple sauce. Before we do that, I want to make sure all students are okay with the additional ingredients: cinnamon and sugar. Please let me know if there are any allergies to either.
Remember to log the minutes you and your child read at home at https://www.rtsutah.com/. I know it can be time consuming to enter each book, so I created monthly books you can enter time with if you prefer. Your child's planner has a sticker with their login credentials for the website.
Have a fantastic week!
