We are starting a new unit in reading. This month we will read and write about communities. Today we read about a boy named Ben and the people that work in his neighborhood. We will also write opinions about different jobs.
The first graders are doing very well practicing addition strategies. Today we reviewed the strategies we have learned so far. Each strategy helps the first graders with fact fluency. Rather than ask them to memorize addition facts, I encourage the class to consider the best way for them to solve each equation.
The jog-a-thon is this Friday! We are in the home stretch of the fundraiser. So far the class has raised $34.50. Thank you so much for all your support so far! If you are interested in volunteering with the run on Friday, we are looking for several more volunteers to help pass out waters and cheer the runners on. Volunteers can sign up for just their child's running time. I have not gotten an official schedule, but first grade has been one of the first groups to run in the past. This week is also Red Ribbon week. The school has different activities planned for each day to promote a healthy life style without drugs and bullying. Today was "Be a jean-ius" day. Tomorrow students can show off their craziest socks. We will be stomping out drugs in boots on Wednesday, and teaming up against drugs with sports team shirts on Thursday. We will also have an assembly in the afternoon that day. Students are encouraged to run in all red on Friday to wrap up the jog-a-thon and Red Ribbon week.
As a last note, there seems to be a few bugs going around. A few students went home early today complaining of sore throats and stomach and headaches. Days can feel really long when you are six and sick, so I encourage families to keep sick kids at home. My hope is that these bugs can work their way through as few first graders as possible, so we will be washing hands a lot and disinfecting our stuff this week. Thank you for your consideration for not only your child but the other children in our class.
