This week is a short one. We are going to cram as much fun and learning into the next few days as possible. Today we started our second week with Chromebooks. The first graders have been working on a website called Lexia. The site has games that are geared towards reading development. Each child has a menu of games that is individualized based on an initial reading assessment. I am looking forward to seeing how the first graders grow this year after using the program!
We are getting close to the end of the math chapter. The first graders have been working hard at using different addition strategies. Today we talked about making a ten from both addends. Between this week and next we will practice with this strategy and learn how to apply the strategies to adding three numbers. We will take the Chapter 3 test on Wednesday of next week.
The first graders and I are reading about communities and jobs in Unit 2. This week and next we will explore how buildings are made and write step by step directions for making our own building. The class voted construction worker as the most interesting job so it will be fun to connect learning from last week to the next two short weeks we have.
The school gathered for the Jog-a-thon assembly today to celebrate how much we raised. The students were more than enthusiastic to claim the prizes and congratulate the top earners. Thanks to the support of all the Upland families, we were able to raise over $16,000! I would like to thank everyone from the bottom of my heart for all your support. I truly appreciate being a part of the Upland family. Thank you, thank you for putting the tools we need to make this year successful and engaging in our hands!
Have a wonderful week!
