Welcome back to school! I hope the break gave everyone a chance to have some rest and do some fun things! We have wrapped up Apple Week here. The first graders did a great job with the science experiments, reading, writing, and creating a portfolio of their work. I will look over their folders, then send them home by the end of the week. Our new theme is animals. We will be reading and writing about owls this week and next. Our focus will be to learn about text features, (subtitles, labels, captions, etc.), and how owls use their environment to survive.
Before the break, I started a chapter on addition strategies. Today we reviewed the two lessons from last week. The homework packet this week has a practice page for the touch points and count on strategies. There is a touch point "cheat sheet" attached to the packet. With the count on strategy, your child should find the larger number, then use the other addend to count up that many. For example, let's say we want to find the sum of 6 + 4. I would start with 6, then count up 4 more numbers to 10. This week we will also learn to look for double addends and use what we know about doubles to find other sums with the doubles plus one strategy.
Just a reminder, there are a few important events coming up. Here is a quick list for the next two weeks:
